Today I am thankful for… a halloween mug

Such a small thing perched at the edge of the clearance shelf, that now finds itself filled with coffee symbolizing much more than a spooky holiday.

small white coffee mug that looks like a happy ghost with a tiny smile and big eyes

I picked up this little joyful vessel at the grocery store. The list of everything that made this purchase possible is a shockingly long list of reasons to be thankful. These are the cliffs notes:

  • I own a car that works. It was filled with gas.
  • I have all of the physical and mental ability needed to drive easily: sight, arms, hands, legs, feet.
  • I got to the store safely without incident.
  • I live in a place with grocery stores that have full shelves and food that is safe to eat.
  • I have money to buy groceries and the strength to carry those bags up the stairs into my home.
  • I have enough extra to treat myself to a cute little mug just because it makes me smile.
  • I have a loving hard working husband who made the coffee this morning to fill this mug.
  • I can smell the coffee. I can taste it.

If anything on this list was no longer true tomorrow, the ripple effects range from disappointing to enormous. So today I choose to be thankful for all that led to my new little mug with his sheepish smile.

And so can you.

Look up from the device you’re using to read this and find an object nearby. Think about all of the things you have to be thankful for that make that one item possible to be sitting in front of you. All that you can do. All that you’ve been gifted. Write it down until your thoughts run dry.

And share that list with someone else. Your kids. Your parents. Your spouse. Your coworker. Your friend.

Bring them into a moment of gratitude.
